Tabitha Sewing Centre - Faisalabad, Pakistan
Nagina Dean founder and CEO of Tabitha Sewing Centre.
Gender equality is one of the challenges in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Women and girls do not get equal rights in the country. Women living in remote and rural areas especially have very limited opportunities to receive education or any other training relevant to home industry. Women from minorities of Pakistan are the most deprived and vulnerable section of the society.
In these circumstances, female empowerment is essential for women from religious minorities. The establishment of the school is an important step towards the development of our girls; but for adult illiterate women, sewing centres offer the best training. Afterwards, working from home, they can earn money for themselves and their families.
She has established a sewing project at FAISALABAD, the first ever organised in the eastern Punjab. This city is known as the industrial hub of Pakistan. Large numbers of Christians live in the city. Tabitha Sewing Centre is working to empower adult illiterate women in the area. Presently 8 women are receiving training. They are learning dressmaking and other sewing skills. They are already producing quality products such as pillow covers, bed sheets, handmade jewellery and various decorations for the home. This training centre needs donations to buy more sewing machines, materials and to extend the project.
